AI Search for B2B Buyers
Is Your Brand Visible?
Discover how AI search for B2B buyers is changing product research, vendor recommendations, and brand visibility for manufacturers and distributors.
Your Buyers Stopped Googling. Did Your Brand Notice?
According to G2’s 2026 Answer Economy report, based on a survey of more than 1,000 B2B buyers, 51% now start their research in an AI chatbot rather than Google, up from 29% eleven months earlier. Sixty-nine percent reported choosing a different vendor than the one they originally had in mind, influenced by what AI told them. One in three bought from a vendor they had never heard of before.
Construction materials buyers are also encountering AI-assisted product research. Contractors, specifiers, and A&D professionals can ask technical questions in ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, and Perplexity, rather than relying exclusively on traditional search results, product catalogs, and manufacturer websites.
The challenge for manufacturers is no longer limited to appearing on a search results page. Their product information also needs to be accessible, accurate, and useful when AI systems assemble answers for buyers.

Why Consumer AI Playbooks Don’t Transfer Directly to Construction Materials
Technical
Buyers ask about RH limits, wear layers, ASTM numbers, and compatibility.
Urgent
A crew may already be scheduled. Materials are needed today, not next Monday.
Multiple Buyers
Specifiers, contractors, purchasing teams, and owners all shape an order.
AI-Assisted
Product comparisons and specification research increasingly involve AI.
The Old Funnel Assumed a Human Would Find You First
Until about five years ago, A&D professionals and specifiers sourced products largely through relationships, physical samples, trade events, and manufacturer representatives. Technical documentation, previous project experience, and peer recommendations helped determine which products were suitable for specification.
In a 2020 ArchDaily survey of 585 architecture and design professionals, 78% identified visits from manufacturer representatives as a way to keep up with new materials and products. Physical samples were especially important during specification, and 89% expected technical data to be available on manufacturers’ own websites.
The same survey found that 91% wanted evidence of successful product application on another project, 70% valued peer recommendations, and 66% considered previous experience with the manufacturer.
Those sources of trust still matter. What is changing is the research process around them. AI-assisted discovery can bring product specifications, comparisons, and supporting documentation into an answer before a buyer contacts a representative.
What’s Actually at Stake
AI-assisted research can influence several decisions before a sales conversation begins.
Whether your brand is considered before a representative gets a call.
Whether the buyer finds technical evidence supporting your product or a competitor’s.
Whether an installer finds your technical documentation when solving a problem.
What buyers encounter across reviews, forums, and professional discussions.
The Questions Didn’t Change. The Answer Layer Did.
Buyers are still asking the same technical questions they always did: wear layers, relative humidity limits, ASTM standards, coverage rates, compatibility, and lead times. What has changed is how they can receive the answers.
Instead of relying only on a sales representative or navigating multiple product pages, a buyer can ask an AI assistant to summarize information gathered from available sources. Clear, structured, and accessible product information makes it easier for these systems to identify relevant facts.

If You’re Not the Cited Answer, You’re Invisible
This is the part most brands miss: AI doesn’t show a buyer ten options and let them choose. It hands over one synthesized recommendation. Being close to right isn’t the same as being cited.
And the stakes are already showing up in the data. In G2’s report, 85% of buyers said they think more highly of a vendor when an AI chatbot mentions them by name in a recommendation. Visibility inside an AI answer isn’t a nice-to-have anymore, it is becoming the modern equivalent of a good first impression.
How AI Turns One Question Into Several Research Paths
An AI assistant may consider related technical, regulatory, local, and product questions before generating a response.
These interactions can introduce buyers to brands they had not previously considered. For manufacturers and distributors, that means product information needs to support discovery before the sales team becomes involved.
What the Brands AI Recommends Are Doing Differently
Brands can improve their readiness for AI-assisted discovery by making product information easier to interpret, compare, and verify. The strongest approach combines useful technical content with consistent information across relevant sources.
1. They Publish Readable Technical Specifications
Product specifications appear in clearly labeled fields on accessible product pages. Buyers can find dimensions, performance limits, certifications, and installation requirements without searching through multiple documents.
2. They Make Comparisons Easier
Side-by-side comparisons help buyers evaluate product attributes, performance, compatibility, and alternatives. Accurate cross-references also make technical differences easier to understand.
3. They Communicate Availability
Manufacturers and distributors clearly identify stocked products, service areas, delivery options, and typical lead times. This matters when a contractor needs materials quickly.
4. They Answer Installation Questions
Complete installation guides, preparation requirements, troubleshooting information, and compatibility documentation help address questions that may not mention a brand by name.
5. They Build a Consistent Offsite Presence
Industry discussions, professional networks, distributor listings, and relevant forums can provide additional context about a brand. Consistent product names and verified specifications help reduce confusion across sources.
